I went to a Saint JHN pop up shop in 2018, I wasn’t expecting anything too crazy, some awkward niggas and a few women who want to sleep with him; regular shit. When I got there I saw hood niggas with face tattoos, Asians with silk scarves and one nigga with the most chapped lips I’ve ever seen holding a dog dressed in all camo. It was a puzzling scene, and then the man of the hour arrived. With a huge smile, a bottom gold grill and a pair of Bred Jordan 1s (!) my first thought was, “this nigga is a star” my second thought was “this nigga has a very large head”. Eventually I talked to him and told him, “my girlfriend (at the time) has a crush on you (she very clearly wanted to fuck him)” he laughed and said “nah, you’re girlfriend sees the you in ME, she got a crush on YOU fam” I don’t know if he was running game to up sell me from a pair of socks to a hoodie (it worked), but after that I knew dude was something special.
So with that said, let’s get into his album “Ghetto Lenny’s Love Songs”
It took a while, but I rock with this very heavy.
Now, I it took me a while to get into this album because I’ve dated two women who were in love with SAINt JHn. I was in a serious relationship with one and the other has my hoodie, so you can see how things were complicated. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to reminisce about a former relationship or a really comfortable hoodie while JHn sang about ratchet complicated situations. However, he’s also a 30+ Dark Skinned Nigga who talks about his emotions with a dangly earring so by law I had to listen to this album.
SAINt JHn is really good at making songs, he understands structure in a way that few really do. He’s not the best singer or rapper BUT, his song making ability pushes him to the next level. He knows how to get his ideas and points across, even if his cadence can make it difficult to pick up the lyrics sometimes. As a person who mumbles and eats words from time to time, I appreciate his commitment. I also appreciate that he has bars about buying houses on Zillow, my Nigga is firmly in his 30s.
I wasn’t sure why he called himself Ghetto Lenny until I heard his song with Lenny Kravitz and his whole image made sense. SAINt JHn is a rockstar for the hood. Like seriously, he wears boots, leather pants and probably has piercings in places that make me scared and uncomfortable. SAINt JHn is like if Lenny Kravitz could fight. Wait, Lenny Kravitz probably can fight, so SAINt JHn is like if Lenny Kravitz HAD to fight. It’s a good vibe.
I really want SAINt JHn to blow up and I think he’s one popular feature away from truly making a name for himself. The features on this album are all fun and fit super well, but he doesn’t have any that will attract large new fanbases to him. I have no doubt that he would be outshined by anyone, but I think that a good feature would definitely bolster his popularity. This is a guy who should have a Grammy by 2021. However I don’t think this is his mindset. From his music and interviews you can tell that he’s all about his journey and development rather than his stardom. That’s pretty respectable.
I really like this album. This is a good “I was sad over a woman for a while but then women liked me cuz I was sad so now I’m happy I’m sad” music. This is for the niggas who cry and tell everyone about it because they see crying as strength. I really want him to win, and I really want you to check out “Ghetto Lenny’s Love Songs”. I give it 6 silver urban outfitter rings out of 7.
