Megan Thee Stallion - Good News

I love Megan Thee Stallion. She’s beautiful, she’s super likable and watching her ascent to stardom has been entertaining. I’ve been on board since 2018 and I’ve sat back in anticipation to see what she’d deliver on her debut album. To my surprise I saw she was releasing one on November 20th. This year has been mostly bad, but I knew that this would be an amazing moment for us, why else would it be called “Good News”?

So let’s get into Megan Thee Stallion’s album “Good News”.

This is a bad Megan Thee Stallion album.

It’s hard to explain, she’s not bad, but the album is. We all know Megan is a great rapper, she’s got a natural talent at this music shit, but this album doesn’t display her strengths. This album feels like being the best student at a D3 school. Meg does everything she can, raps with enthusiasm, switches flows and opens up about moments of vulnerability, but holy shit do the people around her let her down. Don’t get me wrong, there are some good songs here; there are some solid Nissan Altima bops, but a lot is left to be desired. It honestly confuses me, because Megan Thee Stallion was just voted rapper of the year by a major album, but those in charge decided to make an album full of songs that’ll go “viral” instead of songs that showcase how good she is. Like this album was gonna do well no matter what was on it, people WANT her to succeed.

This album feels like watching a man talk his way out of (enthusiastically consensual) sex.

Every time I listen to it I get mad at everyone involved with it that isn’t named Megan. Some parts of it feel desperate for a hit song, other parts feel like they wanted her to be a less racist Doja Cat. But overall it feels like no one involved knows what Megan’s about. Real talk, this album is like seeing the picture of a beautiful person with 6 different filters on it; there’s too much happening and it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s not. Also a lot of the features just feel obligated; you can practically hear all of them counting money in the booth before they send their verses to “Megen The Stalion”. I want better for her.

The saddest part about it is that Megan is clearly putting a lot of effort in, every song has enthusiasm even if it deviates far from what she’s about. This album made me lose faith in RocNation in how they’ve mismanaged this once a generation artist. It’s like they had 0 patience with developing an artist and were solely concerned with making something as quickly as possible because they knew people would buy it any way. But what’s so confusing is that they put the Savage remix on it like they needed to guarantee sales, like bro this album tonally is all over the place, why make things even more chaotic? Whoever came up with the song “Don’t Stop” needs to be in jail. Who’s idea was that shit? Do they actually like Megan? Do they like Young Thug? Do they like music? These are questions I want asked at their trial.

I’m really upset with this album because I see how hard Megan herself worked on it. She went through a made for BET movie’s worth of pain, grief and stress in the past year. When she gets chances to tell her story, it’s truly great. I’m positive that this album will sell well and be nominated for something off the sheer popularity of Megan Thee Stallion, but it feels hollow. So many young women see themselves in Megan, so it’s extra disappointing that the people in charge of making this just saw dollar signs.

“Good News” is a Bad Album and it’s a damn shame. Megan is a great rapper, she deserves a great album. This ain’t it. I give Megan Thee Stallion’s “Good News” 4 TikTok challenges that white women will do to death out of 9.
