In October 2018 I was in an Uber headed from Flatbush to Long Island City and eventually to Harlem. I had 2 pairs of Jordan’s, a weighted blanket and Nintendo switch in my hands as I tried to figure out my next moves. I picked up this habit where I listen to music I’ve never heard during stressful experiences to keep my mind distracted so I don’t taint songs that I love with bad memories. We all got that one song that we love but can’t listen to anymore because it reminds you of a car accident or that time you got syphillis. But I digress, I opened my Tidal app and saw a song called “Honesty” by a guy named “Pink Sweat$.
My first thought was “who the hell is Pink Sweat$?” My next thought was “I fuck with Pink Sweat$”.
So with that, let’s get into Pink Sweat$ debut album Pink Planet.
This is my shit.
Pink Sweat$ got the swag of a nigga who just got a job. Every song has that night before a direct deposit energy. I heard in an interview that he wanted to make songs about love popular again and this whole album is a testament to that. The lyrics aren’t anything new, but you’re glad to hear them. This is the kind of album you listen to when your crush comments on your Instagram picture. This a good album for Quarantine because he makes you don’t feel like you need to be outside to be in love.
This album is more proof that big niggas make better R&B. Chubby niggas always look so comfortable when they’re singing and that relaxed swag works so well with the music. Skinny niggas singing about love always sounds a little desperate, like they’re always begging and chasing. Pink Sweat$ sounds like he’s in love but he’s not chasing you. You can damn near hear him say “these sweats ain’t made to sweat babygirl”, but that could just be me. Pink Sweat$ also looks like me if I really got my shit together did need to take the train anymore so there’s that.
As much as I love this album, I do have a couple criticisms, for one theres not too many songs over 3 minutes. I like R&B albums that have one or two long songs, mostly because I like to have sex to music and long songs are always good for that. (This is why everyone loves Pyramids by Frank Ocean). I know he’s a talented musician so I feel like he could kill an interlude or two. My second issue with the album is that it’s clear that he has the talent to do several different genres but he stays in his comfort zone too much. He’s too likable not to try, and I wish he did more of that.
Overall Pink Sweat$ will always have a special place in my heart cuz he got me through one of the most stressful periods of my time in
New York so I’ll always be a fan. However if you aren’t stressed in the back of an Uber, I think you’ll still be a fan. I give Pink Planet 7 heart emojis out of 9.
