Lucky Daye - Painted

Navigating life in my 30s has been really interesting.

When I was a kid I assumed that in my 30s I would magically know how to function while I ran my sneaker store comedy club. I didn’t know that my experiences would give me the knowledge to make a passing adult. With that said, I still feel really youthful at times, especially with dating. I think I know what I’m doing, but I’m always confused as feelings make things extremely complicated. Being single in your 30s means that you’ve got an adult face with teenage emotions. Everyone has the confidence to rebuild their credit but people still don’t know how to navigate past an awkward double text.

It can be hella trash. But RnB always helps. I don’t know what it is but there’s something therapeutic about a nigga hitting notes while he speaks about romantic frustration. Enter Lucky Daye, he’s been around as a writer for years but at 32 he dropped his debut album “Painted”. So let’s get into it.

If my dangly earring could carry a melody I’m 90% positive that it would sound like Lucky Daye. I mean this in the best way possible. Lucky Daye has the energy of the college weed dealer that never got caught. He’s got an affable nature that makes you like him but he’s sneaky enough to sleep with your sister.

“Painted” paints (I couldn’t help it) a vivid picture of dating in your 30s: Your friends are married worrying about mortgages and raising kids, you’re stressing out because someone didn’t answer your text but they’re posting on Instagram. Things are confusing because everything matters that much more. It hits home closer than I’d like to admit. There are moments where it sounds like Lucky’s bragging about how women love him, but those moments are overshadowed by the loneliness he clearly feels. When the party’s over, everyone’s gone and the condoms are in the trash, what does he have? This is good “let me see what my ex is up to” music.

Overall I very much like this album. If you need an album to play while you wash the musty smell out of thrift store overalls, give this a spin.

I give Lucky Daye 8 fisherman beanies out of 9.
