When I was younger I swore I was antisocial.
I thought I didn’t like people and trends and the only rapper that understood me was Joe Budden. Yep, puberty hit a nigga like Deontay Wilder. When I got a bit older I realized I wasn’t antisocial, I was just broke and lazy. I can be pretty introverted, but for the most part I like to be in the presence of, around or, even inside people. With this in mind I usually shrug off when young people call themselves antisocial. It just sounds deep. People don’t know what it means. I decided to do some googles and I found the text book definition of “antisocial” or rather, the technical term, Antisocial Personality Disorder:
“Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD or APD) is a personality disorder characterized by a long-term pattern of disregard for, or violation of, the rights of others. A low moral sense or conscience is apparent, as well as a history of crime, legal problems, or impulsive and aggressive behavior.”
I’m not gonna lie, that definition sounds cool as hell. In the case of Roddy Ricch, it describes him pretty perfectly. So with that, let’s get into Roddy’s new album “Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial”
This is number one on the charts for a reason.
At first I brushed him off as another Future clone, but the minute Roddy said he put a “100 bands on Zimmerman” I was a fan. This is a great album to commit petty crimes to. Nothing too major but if you wanna shoplift or take a lamp from your job, listen to Roddy. There’s real pain in his voice and he has a real story to tell. I knew something about him was special when I heard him on Nipsey’s song “Racks in the Middle” ; on that song he said “mhm” with the strength of a thousand Percs. Roddy makes music for the people who wear adidas track pants and Jordan’s together on purpose. It’s dangerous and unorthodox but he makes it work.
The stand out song on this tape is “The Box”. It’s catchy, fun, and has a death threat to George Zimmerman; it was destined to be the favorite. However my personal favorite song/the reason I really rock with this tape is “War Baby”. I never mention specific songs but yo, stop reading this and listen to War Baby. Seriously, I got the link for you right here: https://youtu.be/YK9UDVBqIBs.
Listen to that shit fam. Forreal.
Ok I’m gonna assume everyone listened and I’ll go on.
DID YOU HEAR THAT SHIT? Did you hear the pain? Do you feel this young man explaining how his heart turned cold? How he has PTSD? How he used to make the chopper sing like Latta-Do-Dadda? Latta?Do-Dada? This song makes me wanna take my hat off and salute. If Colin Kaepernick kneeled when this played I’d be highly disrespected. The piano, the bass, the gospel singers in the back? Roddy made THIS.
It’s honestly impressive how Roddy made a tape that’s deeply personal yet deeply relatable with some real bops. We can feel his pain, we can see his joy. We can see how he became antisocial; he’s not one to talk to, he’s one to be observed.
Roddy Ricch got one, I can’t wait to see what else he got coming for us. I give “Excuse Me For Being Antisocial” 4 Black and White Photos out of 5.
