K Camp - Kiss 5

I have one memory of K Camp.

One time I was in New Hampshire after a comedy show and this old white man was there. He turned to me, smiled and said “You’re great, I love everything about you and I hope your dreams come true”. Now I wasn’t depressed or anything but it was real nice to hear that sentiment. About 5 minutes later I saw him get thrown out of the bar. Apparently I wasn’t the only person he talked to that night, and apparently he did a lot of talking with his hands in inappropriate places. He got tossed and his phone literally broke into like 10 pieces in front of me. He looked up at the Bartender, begged to know “what he did” and when the bartender refused to let him back in, he said “fucking Obama lover” and crawled away. Now I was the only black person outside as is the custom in New Hampshire, so when he said “Obama Lover” this group of white people all turned to look for my reaction. Why am I bringing this up? Well the song “Cut Her Off” by K Camp was playing during this ENTIRE interaction. This is what I think about every time I listen to K Camp.

I like K Camp. He’s consistent with his music and even though he’s not the most famous guy, he’s still respected by his peers. So when I found out that he had a new album, I figured I’d pay homage to that old racist white man’s broken phone and give it a listen. So with that, let’s get into “Kiss 5”

This is Good.

K Camp might not be well known but when you listen to his music you can tell that he’s had a hand in making several popular songs. The way he understands melody and song creation is really amazing. You know someone’s good at making music when they can’t sing but the song is really good. Listening to K Camp sing is like watching Paul Pierce play basketball, none of this should work but he still knows how to deliver. “Kiss 5” is full of songs that are dedicated to that one woman in your life who doesn’t need to know about the other women in your life. Is she your girlfriend? No. But she still don’t need to know. The songs are smooth and the melodies are unique. It was really fun to listen to each song. He’s like Ty Dolla $ign but without the light skindedness or the slight cocaine habit. The music is so good it made me wonder why he doesn’t have a bigger name in pop culture until I realized that the “Renegade” tiktok dance was inspired by his song Lottery! Now if you don’t know tiktok is the newest social (chinese spy) media platform where black children make up dances and white children make money off the dances the black children created. The first major example of this was the aforementioned Renegade dance created by Jalaiah Harmon; she did it first and then white women got the credit, til black twitter detectives found Jalaiah justice. But I digress, K Camp is one of the first artists to truly tap into TikTok so he’s a trailblazer in that regard, I’m sure the chinese niggas spying on us are bobbing their heads to “Kiss 5” as well.

Now there are a couple things that bother me about this album. For one he saids “ima blow her back out like Ricky” . I don’t know why rappers love taking tragic deaths and making them into sex punchlines but they gotta stop. Like remember when Lil Wayne said “beat that pussy up like Emmitt Till” and got in trouble? What is the point of that? How is that fun imagery? Like did K Camp watch Boyz In Da Hood, watch Ricky get shot in the back (cuz he didn’t zig zag) and think to himself “damn, I can’t wait to have sex JUST like that”. That is super weird bro. I wanna be more mad but I definitely have tried to finger someone during a sad movie so people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. I’ll also say that there are some songs on here that I feel would’ve been better if he sold them to other artists. Now this isn’t diss but on some songs it’s clear that he wrote them for other people in mind but he ended up making them himself. There were some moments where I thought “wow A Boogie would’ve killed this” so I gotta give credit to K Camp because I’ve never felt that way about any song in my entire life.

Overall I really enjoyed “Kiss 5”, K Camp is extremely talented and I really hope that he gets the credit he deserves. My biggest fear is that Mona Scott reaches out to him and offers him too much Love and Hip Hop money for him to decline and we end up seeing him on Vh1 flirting with Karlie Redd. So to stop this from happening I highly recommend you listen to Kiss 5 if you’ve got the time, and I know you do because we’re all stuck in the house. I give Kiss 5 8.5 Broken Phone Pieces out of 10.
