Personal growth is a beautiful thing. When you make positive changes to your lifestyle and mentality, people may think you’re an entirely different person. In reality, you were always this person, you’re just the best version now. Gucci Mane is one of those people who’s grown a lot while staying himself. The growth may be distracting, but the Gucci Mane who shut DJ Envy down in 2012 is the same Gucci Mane who threatened to slap DJ Envy in 2019.
With that said let’s get into Woptober II.
It took me a minute but this shit is hitting.
Gucci Mane doesn’t make popular music, he might have the most popular new artists on his songs but he doesn’t make popular music. He makes the same music he’s always made no matter what the current trends are. Gucci likes to rap about selling drugs, shooting niggas and hoes. It’s a simple formula that’s brought him success. Woptober II is perfect example of a Gucci tape. It’s not too long, the beats are menacing enough and it’s not a chore to listen to it.
Old Gucci albums were shit you listened to when you wanted to sell drugs. New Gucci albums are shit you listen to when you wanna daydream about selling Drugs. Yea he’s saying all the same trap shit, but you know that when he leaves the booth he hangs out with his wife and goes to the gym. Some people might be bummed at that lack of “authenticity” but honestly I’d rather have Gucci talk about drugs he used to sell than have him rap about marital bliss. Chance the Rapper tried that and...it didn’t work out to well.
I started listening to Gucci Mane because I could hear how much he loved to rap no matter what. This album is a great showcase of just that. Gucci likes making music, he has fun rapping and loves that he’s been influential in so many careers. Woptober II isn’t a classic, but it’s a solid Gucci album.
I give Woptober II 7 bigen beard drops out of 10.
