Young M.A. - Herstory In The Making

As a comedian I find myself thinking about my “moment”. That period or opportunity where the stars align and all my effort is validated. I’ve tried to rush it or find shortcuts but life has shown me that rushing the process comes at a price. Until you can accept that things take time, you don’t fully have control over your destiny. The best example of this to me is Young MA. 3 years ago she came out with the smash hit “Ooouu” and instantly blew up. No one had seen anything like her before and she had HipHop intrigued/confused. This was her “moment”. However, Young M.A. wasn’t really ready for her initial moment, but she understood it. So she took control and now, she’s on top of the world.

Young M.A. drops music when she wants, dates beautiful women and even directed her own porno. She’s living the rapper dream so many of us had in high school. Its weird though because she’s both respected and disrespected for her abilities as a female MC. A lot of people really can’t wrap their head around the fact that she’s a full stud lesbian. Sometimes I hear grown niggas talk about how they’d sleep with her even though she’s a whole nigga herself. Now I could go on and on about how it’s rapey to wanna fuck someone who literally no desire to fuck your gender, but I’m not trying to go viral on Twitter. I’m here to talk about music.

She just released her debut album “Herstory In The Making” recently. So let’s get into it.

Now I might be bias because I smoke backwoods and live in Brooklyn, but this shit is pretty wavy.

Young M.A. approaches this album in a pretty blasé way. She’s not overly excited or desperate for it to sell, she’s much more focused on releasing a complete body of work. This album doesn’t pull you in immediately. The energy of this album is equal to a “you can stay over if you want, but I’m probably gonna leave the crib super early tomorrow morning” text on a Saturday night. This casual nature might bother some people but if you let yourself go with the flow it’s really rewarding.

This is a good album to roll a blunt to. It doesn’t require too much focus to enjoy and she has some cool quotables that’ll have you nodding while you seal the Backwood, Dutchmaster or Green Game. You know how there’s some albums that are made to listen to in a car and some made for listening in headphones? This album is meant to be listened to on a PS4 music player. This is a good album to listen to when you don’t feel like texting someone back JUST yet.

A lot of people like to make points about Young M.A. being the only female artist that “doesn’t have to sell sex”, all of those people are idiots. This whole album is about getting pussy, getting into arguments with your girl and apologizing so you can get some head. The only difference between Young M.A. and Future is that Young M.A. is emotionally available...to a point.

There are many moments during this album where Young M.A. gets introspective in the booth but shuts down when discussing arguments with her girlfriend(s). She’s not happy, and doesn’t want to be alone but she only trusts herself to solve her issues. She’s blazing her own path so she doesn’t have much of a role model to get advice from. It’s tough. However, Young M.A. she raps her way through all her issues in a way that leaves you cautiously optimistic that things will be ok.

Overall I really like this album, I think Young M.A. is a really good rapper, however there are some songs you can tell the label made her record. The tone shifts completely when it’s time to come up with a radio hit, but those songs can easily be ignored.

Young M.A. made her moment into a career and things are working out the way she wants them too. I give “Herstory in the Making” 8 pairs of Air Max 97s out of 10.
